Information Resilience: Countering Russian Propaganda and Disinformation

On 29 September 2021, Mr John Spykerman, Director, Russia Team, Global Engagement Center (GEC), US Department of State (DOS) , briefed RUSI(NS) and guests with a presentation titled “Information Resilience: Countering Russian Propaganda and Disinformation.”

Propaganda, disinformation, and misinformation have the potential to polarize societies, create distrust and suspicion, cause societal conflict, and undermine democracies and the democratic system. The mission of the US Department of State Global Engagement Center is to “direct, lead, synchronize, integrate, and coordinate efforts of the Federal Government to recognize, understand, expose, and counter foreign state and non-state propaganda and disinformation efforts aimed at undermining or influencing the policies, security, or stability of the United States, its allies, and partner nations.” Mr Spykerman spoke about the DOS GEC report “Pillars of Russia’s Disinformation and Propaganda Ecosystem” during his presentation. A copy of the report is available here.
